Have you ever felt this way?
Life feels constantly busy.
You are always taking care of work, family, children, and daily responsibilities,
as if you are endlessly moving forward.
And yet, deep inside,
you feel increasingly exhausted.
Even though you are trying so hard,
you still often feel anxious, tense,
or as if you are simply “holding everything together.”
When was the last time you truly felt relaxed,
at ease,
and able to breathe freely?
The world is changing rapidly.
Much of the time,
our attention is focused outward:
work performance,
children’s education,
family responsibilities,
financial pressure,
other people’s expectations…
We keep searching externally for happiness and security,
yet rarely pause
to genuinely care for our inner well-being.
Especially for many Chinese immigrants living abroad:
we work hard to adapt to a new culture and environment,
carry the pressures of both family and work,
become used to taking care of others,
yet forget how to care for ourselves.
On the surface, everything may appear fine,
but internally, we often feel:
tired,
tense,
lonely,
and unable to truly relax for a very long time.
The good news is:
this can change.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based mind-body training program grounded in scientific research.
It was founded in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Today, MBSR is one of the most extensively researched and scientifically validated mindfulness programs in the world.
It has been widely applied in:
When many people first hear the word “mindfulness,” they may think it is a religion or a way to “empty the mind.”
But mindfulness is neither.
Mindfulness practice is not about forcing yourself to stay positive all the time, nor is it about suppressing emotions or controlling yourself.
Instead, mindfulness helps us:
slowly return to the present moment and honestly notice what we are experiencing.
Including:
As we begin to cultivate awareness, we gradually gain more choices.
We are no longer simply pushed around by stress or trapped in habitual reactions.
Instead, we learn to:
face life with greater stability and care for ourselves with more gentleness and compassion.
Research has shown that MBSR may help:
Many people experiencing chronic stress, insomnia, anxiety, low mood, burnout, or even physical pain, have learned through mindfulness practice how to develop a healthier relationship with their bodies and minds.
Research also shows that MBSR can help parents:
Over the past 25 years, hundreds of scientific studies have found that mindfulness practice can effectively support parents in navigating the emotional demands of family life.
In many ways, what children truly need is not a “perfect” parent, but a parent who is emotionally present, grounded, and able to care for themselves.
The standard MBSR program lasts eight weeks.
Before the course begins, there is usually an orientation session to help participants understand the course structure and experience the practices.
The full program includes:
Course practices include:
The course also includes opportunities for group sharing and discussion.
Many meaningful insights arise through participants’ real-life practice experiences and learning together in a supportive environment.
Perhaps the most important aspect of mindfulness
is that it helps us reconnect with ourselves.
As mindfulness gradually becomes part of daily life,
you may begin to notice:
even when the outer world remains busy,
your inner world can become more steady.
No matter what circumstances you face,
you can slowly return to your own awareness.
And this sense of groundedness
can become a deep inner source of strength.
(Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, MBSR)
Jon Kabat-Zinn

I was born and raised in Beijing, China. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Capital Normal University and a master’s degree in psychology from Tsinghua University. I co-translated , authored by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal, and Jon Kabat-Zinn, into Chinese; the Chinese edition is titled I received formal training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and I have continued teacher-development training and certification through the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, where I have completed Level 1 teacher training.
I have received formal training directly from Drs. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. My first MBSR training with both Drs. Kabat-Zinn and Santorelli took place in Beijing, China, in 2013. I later attended multiple retreats led by each of them in the United States and Europe.
The Mindful Way Through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness中文版。
